アメリカの鍾乳洞の中でも、規模からいえば、このカールズバッドが最大でしょう。広大な地中空間の中で、スケールの大きな造形を見ることができます。空間が広いだけに、車椅子の人でもかなりの部分を見て回れるようです。アメリカが体の不自由な人に配慮しているのはベトナム戦争負傷兵への配慮のせいだという見方もありますが、動機はともあれ、アメリカでの官民の配慮の行き届き具合に比べると、わが日本の状況は悲しくなります。
この洞窟はこうもりの住みかとしても有名で、夕方のこうもりの出動時間には大勢の見物客が集まります。
Among the many caves and caverns in USA Carlsbad Caverns are probably the largest. One can see big formations in the huge underground space. Partly thanks to the hugeness many areas in the cave are handicap accessible. Some say the US government pays much attention to handicapped people to honor veterans wounded in the Viet Nam War. Whether it is the case or not, sympathetic attitudes toward a handicapped person in both public and private life in USA is quite admirable and, unfortunately, far beyond comparison with that in Japan.
This cave is also famous for numberless bats living there. At dusk when those bats go out to get food, a lot of people come to see.
