ブダペストの地下鉄は世界で２番目に古いものだそうですが、設備も古いようで、エスカレーターを利用すると、階段部分の動く速さと手すりの動く速さがシンクロしていなくて、手すりにつかまっている手だけが後に取り残されそうになるのには参りました。乗るときに改札がないので、つい無賃乗車の誘惑にかられますが、出口の方でよく検札をしているので、止めた方が無難です。言い訳など絶対に聞いてくれそうにない、体格のいいおばさんたちがあなたを待ち構えています。
The subway in Budapest is the second oldest in the world. Regretably its facilities are old, too. The movement of the steps of its escalators and that of the handrails aren't well syncronized. If you hold on a handrail, your hand would be left behind! As they don't check tickets at the entrance, one may be tempted to ride without one. YET it is by no means prudent, for they do often check at the exit. You would be easy prey for massive women watching for free-riders, who appear to be determined to never accept any excuses whatsoever.
