グランドキャニオンには谷底まで下りるトレイルがあります。普通の人には日帰りはきついので、谷底で１泊することになります。その宿は人気が高く、私の場合、当日の夜明け前から谷の上の予約場のキャンセル待ちに並んでうまく確保できました。（私の次の人はダメでした。）日の出とともに、トレイルを下り始めたのですが、傾斜がきつく、砂地で滑りやすいうえに、日が高くなるに連れて、ものすごく熱くなります（日を遮る樹木がない）。そのうえ、途中でサングラスが壊れてしまったために、まぶしくて、とてもきつかったです。結局、５〜６時間かけて、谷底にたどり着いたのですが、疲れのあまり、ベッドにころげ込んで、そのまましばらく爆睡してしまいました。でも、疲れた分だけ、その夜、宿で食べたビーフシチューはとびきりおいしかったです。翌朝は、この熱さの経験から、日の出を待たず、夜明けとともに、登り始めました。前日のつらさが体にしみ込んでいただけに、まだまだこんなものじゃないぞと思っているうちに３時間くらいで上に着いてしまい、少々拍子抜けでした。
ちなみに、私は、トレイルで女性とすれ違うときにはいつも道を譲っていたのですが、多くの人がニッコリ笑ってサンキューと言ってくれるのに、日本人の女性は何も言わずにさっさと行ってしまう人が多かったです。習慣の違いなのかもしれませんが、それにしても残念です。
Several trails in Grand Canyon lead all way to the valley bottom. As it is very difficult for an ordinary person to make a round trip in a day, many spend a night at a lodging at the valley bottom. This trip is very popular and the lodging is hard to reserve, though. I waited in line for standers-by at a reservation center since before dawn and I was lucky enough to get a bed. (It was the last bed available for that night.) I started to climb down at sunrise. It turned out to be extremely hard and strenuous. The slope was steep and slippery with sand. It bacame hotter and hotter as the sun went up with no trees to shutter the sunshine. To be worse, my sunglasses were broken on the way so that my eyes were burnt with fierce sunshine. After five or six hours of bitter struggle, I finally got to the valley bottom. I was so tired that I fell asleep as soon as I lay down on a bed. All the more, beef stew served at the lodging for supper was more than strengthening for my exhausted body. Next morning I started to clime up at dawn before sunrise to avoid terrible sunburn. As I had learned a bitter lesson from the previous day's experience, the climb-up seemed to be a rather easy part getting to the valley top in just three hours.
When I passed by a woman on the trail, I yielded the way every time. Although many of the women said "Thank you" with smile, quite a few Japanese women just passed by without saying a word. Probably it was due to difference of habitude. Still I regret such a way of the Japanese.
