地中のマグマで熱せられた水や水蒸気があちこちで噴出しています。間欠泉となって一定間隔で噴き出ているものもありますし、始終出ているものもあります。地球の活力と畏怖を感じさせられます。アイスランドやニュージーランドの北島でも似たような地熱活動が見られますが、解説によれば、世界中の間欠泉のうちの４分の３がイエローストーンにあるそうです。ビジターセンターでは大きな間欠泉の次の噴出予想時刻が貼り出してありましたが、「一定間隔」といっても、かなり気まぐれなようなので、予想時刻外でも、轟音が聞こえたらすぐ振り返りましょう。
Water and steam heated underground by the magma erupts everywhere. Some erupt at a certain interval while others vomit ceaselessly. The mother earth shows people its vitality and volatility inspiring awe and admiration. Similar geothermal activities can be seen in Iceland and in the North Island of New Zealand, too. Still, they say three quarters of geysers worldwide are found here in Yellowstone. In the Visitor Center you can find prediction of next eruption of larger geysers. Nonetheless they are not as faithful as some of their names suggest (such as "Old Faithful"). Therefore it is a nice tip to look around everytime you hear a roaring sound even when you least expects it.
