以前、ニューヨークに滞在していた際に、某国移民系の店で詐欺をしかけられました。写真店で、$4.99のフィルムを買ったところ、お釣りを渡そうとしないので、「お釣りをくれ」と言ったところ、店員は「税金分だ」とあからさまな嘘を言って、渡そうとしません。当地の付加価値税率くらい知っていたので、「何の税だ。税率を言ってみろ」と言ったところ、店員は、観念したようで、上司らしき人に視線を送り、その上司がうなずいたので、やっと1セント返してきました。その店員の一存ではなく、店ぐるみで、外国人観光客から、たかが1セントでもまき上げようとしていることが明らかでした。お釣りを受け取って、店を出ようとすると、その店員がまた声をかけてきましたが、負け犬の遠吠えだよとほくそ笑みながら、無視して立ち去りました。後で調べたところ、当該国（ヨーロッパのラテン系）系の写真屋は悪い評判があるようで、その後は、まじめと評判のヨーロッパの別の民族系の店を専ら利用していました。（昔のことであり、今の状況は知りません。）
When I stayed in NYC long ago, I was cheated at a shop run by immigrants from a particular nation. I bought a photo film at $4.99. But they didn't give me change. So I demanded change. The shop clerk answered "It's Tax" apparently lying. As I knew the local VAT rate, I insisted saying "What tax? Tell me the tax rate." The clerk seemed to give up and looked at a superviser. The superviser nodded and the clerk finally gave me one cent. It was apparent cheating was not personally but organizationally conducted at the shop. Then the clerk tried a last effort to cheat me, calling at me when I was going out of the shop with the penny. I just ignored it knowing they were the losers. Afterwards I found out the photo shops run by that particular nation were quite notorious. (It was decades ago and things may be different - or the same - now.)
