北緯８０度と北極圏の真っ只中にあり、シロクマやセイウチが住む秘境です。（島の道路には「シロクマ横断注意」の標識があります。）以前、写真集を見て、氷河が築いた荒々しい山と海と氷の取り合わせの美しさに魅了され、いつか訪れたいと思っていた場所です。冬は１日中暗闇に閉ざされますが、暗闇の中に家々の明かりが灯るさまは幻想的でとても素晴らしいよと地元の人は言っていました。
Spitbwergen (or Svarvald) Islands are located in the midst of the Arctic Circle at 80 degrees N. There live polar bears. (A traffic sign on the island says "Attention! Polar bears crossing.") When I saw photos of the islands, I was impressed by the beauty made up of glacier-made mountains, the sea and ice. I wished to visit them ever after. The dream came true. In winter the islands sleep in utter darkness. They, however, say that the view of lights coming from houses in such darkness is extremely beautiful beyond imagination.
