山を目指してあぜ道を歩いていると、民族衣装をまとった女の子がやって来て、「写真撮らない？」と言ってきました。そうやって小銭をあげる人がいるからこそ、この子は年端もいかないのに働かされてしまうのだろうなと思ったので断ったら、次は「お菓子ちょうだい」と言われました。お金と違って、お菓子なら、この子自身のものになるだろうから、どうしようかなと思ったのですが、子どもたちを乞食にしてはいけないと思ったので、結局それも断りました。でも、この子からは「英語上手ね」とほめられた上、道も教えてもらいました。いい子でした。
その後、村の中を歩いていると、男の子から”Hello!"と声をかけられました。こちらが”Hi!"と返事をすると、その子は、初めて聞いたのか、小さな声で何度も”Hi"と繰り返していました。恐らく教育の機会にも恵まれない中で、こうやって旅行者から聞いて英語を覚えているんでしょうね。とても可愛かったです。この子たちが幸せになってくれるように祈ります。
ポカラで、偶然、日本人の画描きさんと知り合ったところ、数日後、カトマンドゥの商店でバッタリ再会してしまいました。カトマンドゥは結構広くて雑然としているのに、世界は狭いです。
I came across a little girl with traditional costume on my way to the mountain. She asked me if I would like to take her picture. I declined. I thought she was made to work just because there're people who gave her money. Then she asked me "Sweets?" I refused again for I thought it would make her a beggar. Despite my refusal she was so nice to teach me the right way to the mountain.
After that I met a boy in a village. He said "Hello!" to me and I answered "Hi!" Obviously it was the first time for him to hear the word "hi." He said to himself "Hi" repeatedly in order to practice the expression. Those children, probably without much education opportunity, seemed to learn English from tourists. I wish them happy life.
I met a Japanese painter in Pokhara. After a few days I came across him in Kathmandu all by accident. It shall not be expected for Kathmandu is a fairly big and crowded city. It's a small world!
