行程としてはパースからメルボルンに向かったのですが、そのとき、トラブルが．．．。カンタス航空で一っ飛び．．の予定だったのですが、空港に着いてチェックインしようとすると、今日はストで全便欠航だというんです。一瞬、どうしよう？と途方に暮れましたが、幸い当時は大きな航空会社が２つあり、もう一つの方のアンザス航空（これって確か今はないんですよね）は運航しているらしいというので、他の予定客とともにアンザスのカウンターにダッシュ！満席だよと言われたのですが、他になすすべもないので、キャンセル待ちにチャレンジすることに。待ってる間、どうしようかな？こんなとこで待っててもムダになるかもしれないし、それなら町に帰ってホテルを探した方がいいかな？一人旅なら空港で寝てもいいんだけど、相方は嫌だろうなとかずっと考えていました。結局ふん切りがつかず、前のキャンセル待ちの人たちが少しずつ呼び込まれるのをうらやましく見ながら、とうとう出発間近に。あ〜あダメだったかと思った途端、呼ばれました、私たちの名前が！あ〜よかった。しかも、エコノミーは私がまさに最後の席だというので、相方なんかビジネスの席に座らせてもらいました。結果オーライでした。
後で地元の人にストの話をしたら、その人は、オーストラリアは労働者の力が強すぎるんだ。だから、ニュージーランドと効率性で競争したら勝てないんだと言っていました。確かに、以前からオーストラリア便だけ飛行機の荷物の重量制限がきつかったりして（これって、空港で荷物を扱う労働者から重いものを持つと腰が痛くなるという要求があって、設けられた制限らしいです。）、オーストラリアの労働側って要求厳しいんだなあ〜って思わされた事件でした。
We planned to fly from Perth to Melbourne by Qantas Airline. But at the airport we found that all Qantas flights of that day were cancelled due to a labor dispute. For a moment I was at a loss at the news. Yet I recovered soon and rushed to the counter of Anzus Airline who was one of the two major carriers in Australia in those days and, thank goodness, operated their business just normally that day. At their counter I found that Anzus flights were already fully booked, just as expected in such a situation. Nonetheless, with no other options at hand, I decided to try to get stand-by tickets. Waiting for a long time I wondered if I should rather give up and go back to the city to find a hotel before it was too late. If I had travelled alone, I could have spent the night at the airport. But, travelling with my wife, it would not have been a very good idea for her. Deep in such thoughts, I saw with envy those stand-by passengers ahead of me called aboard one by one. When departure time was approaching close and I almost lost any hope, our names were finally called! To make good thigs better, my spouse was given a businnes-class seat for I got the literally last seat of the economy-class. Thus it ended in happiness.
When I talked about this event to a local Australian, he told me that the labor movement had tremendous power in Australia, causing Australia less competitive than, say, New Zealand. It reminded me of a peculiar restriction of weight of a baggage carried on an airplane. A restriction peculiar to baggages destined to Australia, enacted at a complaint by Australian workers that handling heavy baggages was not good for their bodies. Thus I was reminded of the fierceness of demands by the labor in Australia.
